I had originally hoped to run my son through a Battletech campaign on our family vacation to Canada. Unfortunately, said family actually proved really entertaining, delightful, and engaging. Darn Canadians and their anti wargame, pro fun family time agenda!
We did, however, manage to get a game in at the airport between flights. I was able to store all the terrain, map sheets, and units in my backpack alongside my laptop, iPad, Switch, chargers, and books. That is to say: even in a full backpack, I could fit the terrain. I had even more–enough to cover twice this area. We didn’t end up using it but we had a good time.

Given the restricted area, the game turned into a bit of a shoot-off, with both of us rotating around the major line of sight blocking buildings. He found his elite force struggling to land enough hits to outpace my spread out firepower. We were in a fight to the death and I barely managed to eek out a victory thanks to my Goblin tanks.

My Urbanmechs were predictably not great and my other mechs didn’t hold up very well against his outright firepower. The strength-in-numbers approach for my lance of Goblin tanks really saved me.

It was a fun, short match and a cool proof of concept. I half want to fill a bin with these buildings and scatter elements just to see how many tables I could densely pack. I didn’t find the time to significantly expand the set but I’ll be putting up a small, cheap pack on one of the STL sales sites to augment my already free pack released on Thingiverse. This was a fun project and a great little interlude before I start my next big swing: prepping and painting a Dropfleet Commander UCM fleet. I let my Canadian nieces pick the colors, so expect to see a fleet that incorporates red and purple over the next few weeks.

Or, you know, literally any other random thing. I’m looking at Necromunda, OnePageRules everything, my Irish and Vikings, and every single thing I could possibly 3D print miniatures for right now. The resin printer was a mistake. This is too much freedom.

Send help.
