After an exhausting set of weeks, I did at least manage to spend some time relaxing last weekend. I watched a lot of Taskmaster with the wife—I cannot recommend it enough—and along the way I painted a few bits of scatter while also priming a ton of terrain. That is to say: I didn’t get much done, but I got a ton started.

This is part of a village I’ve been slowly working on. You can see one of the buildings above. I completed the buildings over a month ago now, so I spent time this weekend finishing up a bunch of the scatter. Next on the list is around 12 feet worth of walls, which should wrap the project up nicely.

It’s nothing remarkable, but these odds and ends always help to flesh out a board. My vision for this was very simple: a normal village. Thatch roofs, simple houses, and a bit of scatter. I’m not sure why, but the simple fantasy/medieval village always appeals to me as a setting for a game. It fits in so many different games and is just nice to look at.

Really, this is my vision of a murren village for Desiderium. The theme with the murren is that they’re basically humans, but rats. I like the juxtaposition of rats in normal looking homes going about their days. It’s a fun vision and I think it makes our a game a touch more unique.

Like I stated above, next up is painting the walls—then, I intend to base the buildings themselves and put the scatter onto those bases. It’s still a bit experimental for me, but I really like the look of a building on a nice base. I’m hoping to pull that off here.

Anyway, not the most productive I’ve ever been, but it was nice to get something done after the month I’ve had. Next up on the painting block is a few new dwarf units. I have a few chanters and a new unit altogether: rockworms. They’re what they sound like. I realized the dwarves needed something that could reach out and touch objectives or stall enemies while their slower units arrive. After mulling it over, it hit me that they live in caves, where the only fast moving things would be stuff better adapted to caves than bipeds. I debated cool dinosaurs (that… doesn’t make sense; don’t ask), spiders, and worms. Ultimately, I found some cool worm models.

As ever, I’m a sucker for a fun mini. I’ve got twenty of these to print off and paint. I probably won’t do half as well as the gentleman cited above, but it’ll be an easy project for a quick win this weekend before the world gets thrown into whatever the next bit of chaos is. Take ’em while you can, right?
