I was sick this past weekend, so I found myself in the awkward space of wanting to be productive but lacking the mental capacity to do anything requiring heavy thought. Luckily, painting exists! So I, uh… painted 30ish models? That’s normal, right?

Either way! These are the enemies for Scrapjacks, a coop/solo game about space salvagers who pay off their debt by exploring derelict spaceships. Along the way they encounter all kinds of friction: stuff breaks, gravity flips off, and monsters spawn. The game lists everything from space pirates to dimensional entities. You don’t have to make all of them. You could always theme a mission as being defended by, say, all security droids.

Which is boring. Bring on the space bugs, dimensional entities, robots, and pirates!

Also cleaning robots! Did I mention cleaning robots? You start off fighting Tier 1 enemies that aren’t very tough, but gosh if these aren’t adorable. They were easy to paint and I love how they look. I’ll feel bad each time I kill one. Onto less squishy bots!

These were all from the Human Defense Force from One Page Rules. I realize now I forgot to make “Large maintenance bots” but I’ll likely make do just fine with some of the other models I have laying around. I should call out that I printed and painted more models than necessary. You really only need 5 models of any given type: four regular and one “prime” that spawns by chance. The robots with differently colored heads are my primes. These were an easy exercise in drybrushing and picking out simple details to make it pop. As these are enemies for a coop game, I didn’t really worry about making them spectacular–just good enough for tabletop. Now onto the squishies.

These were an absolute blast. They come from Edge Miniatures and I’ll caution they come in parts–I digitally kitbashed them for printing so I wouldn’t have to glue them together. They cover most of the bug types and I have a batch of old tyranids that will act as the Tier III Bio-Assets. They took a dry brush super well and I’m happy with the results for such little effort. The teal eyes really helped everything pop.

Finally, we have the dimensional entities, which are just flame atronach from The Elder Scrolls. I printed two but only needed one, so I painted them different colors. They could also work as the “AI Avatar.” I just couldn’t think of a better model, but the idea of painting the flames purple came to me and I figured it was worth a shot. I’m satisfied with the result–again, especially for something painted efficiently.

Beyond these I’m missing all the humanoid enemies: infested crew, raiders, pirates, corporate enforcers, and a high level human captain. I should be able to easily cover these with my already extensive collection of random science fiction miniatures. In fact, I probably did not need a lot of what I painted this past weekend–I’ve practically got a drawer full of loose scifi minis. The only thing I can’t say I’ve solved or have a good answer for is nanite swarms. They’re described as “self-replicating machine clouds stripping matter and systems.” I’ll mull this one more but that might be the one enemy type I reroll.

I had fun with this! Another light and breezy project that was easy to blast through. Very satisfying. I also got my Scrapjacks done, but they’ll get their own post. From here I just need to bang out the space station terrain… of which I printed far too much. I finally put a 12×12″ tile together and put terrain on it and realized I have maybe three times more scatter than I really need. I hope to paint all of it anyway as it will serve as interior scifi scatter for years to come, which is a rad idea.

So… yeah. I feel better. I painted a bunch of minis. These are clearly linked. Someone call a doctor–I’ve solved illness!

  1. They look really nice. An impressive collection, especially for a weekend when you’ve been ill!

  2. Sorry about the illness, and I agree with tankfanboy, these look great!
Question for you, have you done any play testing? I’m looking for another solo game, something space-based that works better than “5 Parsecs”, i.e. more narrative gaming and less bookkeeping.

I have a suggestion for the nanites – age of sigmar had a sylvaneth spell a while back that was a swarm of bugs. I’d suggest that, or something similar
