A quick one today. My son and I have been painting cars–his are still work in progress but I managed to bang out a few here alongside some gateways. I’d still like to get around to painting a downed aircraft and I hope to make a custom board for a Gaslands event game down the line.

On whole, these weren’t my most exciting vehicles. I stuck to simple weapon choices and minimal pieces. Other than Rusty these probably wouldn’t stand out a ton–I just wanted more options and a quick little project to do alongside my son.

Mission accomplished, really. He’s very excited to play Gaslands with me. I’m thinking to run us through a small race series with accumulating points for each team.

Of course this competes with a ton of other games for our time. I will start printing off his lizardmen soon and I was thinking to play those in a skirmish game at first. We might do the One Page Rules fantasy skirmish ruleset or maybe something more interesting like Sword Weirdos, which looks like it would do a great job of being an engaging game with just 5-10 models per side.

Still–cars have always captured his imagination, so I’m sure we’ll get a few rounds in. I’m enjoying this little foray into Gaslands. It’s honestly a better game than I remember. I’m putting together my thoughts on it as I play and they’ve been quite positive so far. Sometimes a simple idea is enough to get real far. The movement system in Gaslands is one such simple idea. Brilliant stuff. I’ve been making my way through Hutchinson’s book on wargaming: The Fundamentals of Tabletop Miniatures Game Design: A Designer’s Handbook by Glenn Ford and Mike Hutchinson. Great read so far. The man may very well be onto something.

If nothing else, he knows how to make a good excuse to have fun hobbying.
