I’m sure anyone who has gotten into 6mm Napoleonics has run into this: how do I go about basing? If you have a local community, that decides it quite easily, I’d think. I don’t have one, so that’s out the window.

Next, I suppose I’d look at the game I intend to play, but we hit a second issue: I want to play both LaSalle 2 and Blücher from Sam Mustafa. One benefits from smaller bases and the other from 75mm squares.

Next wrinkle: I am unsure if either system can be used for event games where folks show up, learn, and play and ideally have a good time, so I want flexibility in case I need to resort to a different system to justify buying two large armies of super tiny men.

Okay, okay. That’s a lot.

(If you don’t get this reference, go look up Columbo, it’s shockingly brilliant)

I can’t understand why you didn’t turn off the li–wait, no.

I want to enjoy picking up the base!

See, I thought I had this solved: 20mm squares. Super flexible, one strip per base. Just smash them together as you need or 3D print sabbot bases for them. Unfortunately, I hate picking the damn things up and they just don’t look good together.

40mm becomes a reasonable replacement, but I feel it’s a touch to big. 30x20mm is what I ended up landing on and I’m not 100% happy with it, but the bases are bought and I’m rolling with it. I had to decide, so… done! Decided!

I figure 30x20mm with two strips (8 men) per base. In LaSalle 2, four bases together make a unit, so that will be 32ish men per unit, which I feel will look good. For Blücher I’ll put four to a large sabbot, which feels… still somehow unsatisfactory. At this point I suppose if I’m supplying both armies I may just customize sabbots that fit the bases together more tightly.

It’s funny–of all the issues, this is the one that’s always bothered me the most at small scales. There’s so many great games that can be played at 6-15mm that I don’t wish to accidentally cut myself off from any. It’s all likely moot unless I find folks who will play, but at least I’ll finally get these of my To-Do List and onto my “Why did I waste time on that when I could have been painting 28mm Saracens?!” List.
