Pro’s and Con’s at the end.

I will start by linking the product, but also noting I don’t fully recommend it:

https://www.killingfieldsterrain.com/sg-flex-mat.html

If you haven’t seen it, take a look at the link to get the idea. Pay attention to the claims it makes. The mat should roll out flat and allow for hills. It states it is 7×5–I am not sure how, but I definitely received one that is 6×4. My receipt states it is 6×4. I assume there are options, but I can’t confirm at time of review due to the product being sold out.

Let’s get good stuff out of the way: it looks great. It is a beautiful mat in person, though a little darker than it appears in photos (Including mine). Here’s a few shots:

On first rollout it did not roll flat. As you can see in that last image it had a lot of wrinkles from transport. It has improved some, but not 100%. After a few days out on my table and after some effort on my part to flatten it, it still has problems. Here’s a few more shots:

I have also tried rerolling it and unfurling again. The wrinkles remain in the same places. I may try flexing it and “working it out” as a way to see if I can get it properly flat, but it is flat enough to not hinder gameplay. It does leave a few items on the table feeling floaty (example below) but during gameplay this isn’t noticed.

I am not confident this is a good mat to transport. It is certainly more cumbersome than my Cigar Box Battle mats or any given neoprene mat. I have to transport it in the box it came with, as it comes with no bag. As a player who usually supplies terrain for my matches anywhere (game store, houses, bar) I am disappointed in the obvious lack of easy mobility, but I’m unsurprised.

Games do look great on this mat. Models sit and move just fine, and terrain almost grips to it, so it’s hard to slide buildings around (big plus). The mat doesn’t bunch up. It sits hard and (roughly) flat. Rolling dice is an absolute no-go, though. You will need a dice tray.

My main issue here comes to cost. The mat is $88 before shipping–only around $15 more than competing products, but it lacks convenience. It’s beautiful, but touchy. I am leaving it in a dedicated gaming room that sees 1-3 matches weekly. For this I amhappy with my purchase, but if you want to take this to the store or bar or buddy’s house… I can’t say it’s a good purchase. I really can’t. Get a Cigar Box Battlemat or a neoprene mat.

I don’t regret my purchase, but I don’t recommend it. There you are: an annoying and lukewarm conclusion.

Pros:

-Looks beautiful

-Buildings sit well on it.

-It makes buildings look better without their own bases, which saves me work!

-The more I use it, the more I like it, and I definitely won’t use a different mat for at home gaming when I have this one available.

-People kinda marvel at it which makes you feel important for having spent too much money on a silly product

Cons:

-Doesn’t unfurl well

-Cumbersome to transport

-Will not seem to lay totally flat even after a few days

-Priced higher than more convenient options, but is still prettier

Did you have to wait a long time to get your mat. I ordered one on July 12 2021 and the company claims that it ships the next day therefore you pay for quick shipping. I emailed them twice no response. They don’t have a phone number nor an address. What gives with this company Faith
